Community members from Crawford & Elvanfoot, Glespin and Rigside and Douglas Water are being invited to join Steering Groups for new Make Your Way sustainable travel projects taking place until March 2022. The project will put in place community-specific changes leading to measurable changes in travel behaviour.
Participants will be invited to attend four hour-long meetings between now and March 2022, which are likely to be a mix of digital and on-site meetings as COVID restrictions allow and as are required by the project. Times and dates will be organised to best suit contributing members.
Chaired by the Rural Development Trust’s Community Action Lanarkshire programme, the Steering Groups will help tailor the project to each community’s needs and wishes and provide valuable community knowledge, feedback and connections to the communities. It is hoped that around six participants will join each Steering Group from a range of ages and backgrounds.
Community Action Lanarkshire Project Officer, Sarah O’Sullivan, says, “We’re looking forward to forming three diverse Steering Groups for each community who will provide a range of local knowledge and skills to the project. No previous experience is necessary – just a knowledge of the area and a passion for change.”
Following an initial review of existing sustainable travel data, a programme of community and school focussed activity will take place, alongside the development of physical and digital information packages.
In addition to this, feasible and costed options for one priority active and sustainable travel project per community will be developed, with a view to finding funding to make it happen on the ground.
The project will also support the installation of Make Your Way active travel mapboards and wayfinding for Crawford, Elvanfoot, Glespin and Rigside and Douglas Water, which was developed in 2020 and delayed due to COVID.
The programme follows 16 Make Your Way active travel mapping initiatives that have taken place in South Lanarkshire between 2016 – 2021, and nine Sustainable Travel Action Plans in 2019.
