Crawford and Elvanfoot drive forward pedestrian focussed improvements

Residents in Crawford and Elvanfoot are being asked to take part in a consultation regarding speed reduction and pedestrian safety.

The consultation is available online at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/crawfordandelvanfoot, or by picking up and dropping off paper copies from the boxes outside Crawford Community Hall and inside Elvanfoot phone box, before Monday 14 February.

Residents are also invited to take part in a Community Street Audit on Tuesday 1 February, meeting at 9:30am outside Crawford Village Hall. Participants will have a chance to highlight any issues relating to pedestrian safety on the ground with the Project Officer, including pavement issues, dropped kerbs, crossing points and links to the wider pathway network. The consultation is taking place as part of the Make Your Way project, focussing on progressing sustainable travel priorities in Crawford and Elvanfoot, Glespin, and Rigside and Douglas Water before April 2022.

It follows an initial survey in June this year, where Crawford and Elvanfoot residents voted for the progression of a Feasibility Study for Speed Reduction and Pedestrian Safety Measures, as a priority project which would enable them to walk, wheel and cycle more in the villages. Glespin residents voted for a Feasibility Study assessing options for a path between Glespin and Douglas, and Rigside and Douglas Water residents voted for the provision of new benches, bike racks and bins.

Questions in the consultation include issues relating to traffic speeds and pedestrian / cyclist safety, motivations and barriers to active travel and which types of improvements would be most favourable.

Community responses will be collated alongside landowner and stakeholder discussions to form an Options Appraisal and Feasibility Study which may be used to apply for funding to progress the proposals.

Make Your Way is supported by Paths for All’s Smarter Choices Smarter Places, Strathclyde Passenger Transport and South Lanarkshire Council’s Renewable Energy Fund. It is managed by Rural Development Trust’s Community Action Lanarkshire programme. It is part of a year on year programme, running since 2016, which targets sustainable travel in rural Lanarkshire and has included community mapping and the development of Sustainable Travel Action Plans to date.

The information gained in the survey will allow us to propel the project forward, which will make a huge difference to the lives of people in Crawford and Elvanfoot.”

The Make Your Way programme has also included Bikeability levels 1 and 2 in Crawford, Douglas and Rigside Primary Schools, as well as the installation of Make Your Way active travel maps and wayfinding, the development of sustainable travel information packs and Community Cycling Days in Rigside Playpark (23 October), Glespin MUGA (6 November) and Crawford Playpark (20 November).
