Join the Litter Pick and Street Audit in Rigside and Douglas Water

Community members from Rigside and Douglas Water are being invited to a Litter Pick and Community Street Audit on Saturday 21 August and Saturday 4 September, respectively. 

The COVID secure events are taking place as part of the Make Your Way project, focussing on progressing sustainable travel priorities in Crawford and Elvanfoot, Glespin, and Rigside and Douglas Water before April 2022. It is part of a year-on-year programme, running since 2016, which targets sustainable travel in rural South Lanarkshire and has included community mapping and the development of Sustainable Travel Action Plans to date. 

The Litter Pick and Community Street Audit have been scheduled following the return of the Make Your Way community survey in Rigside and Douglas Water in June, where volunteering opportunities and priority sustainable travel projects were identified to pursue. 

The Litter Pick takes place on Saturday 21 August, 10am – 12 noon. Participants are asked to meet at the Community Hall to pick up gloves, bags and litter pickers before choosing an area or two to tackle.  Booking essential at the details below.

The Community Street Audit is hosted by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. It takes place on Saturday 4 September, 10am – 12 noon. Participants are asked to meet at the benches at the bottom of Beechgrove Street for an introduction, before moving on to an hour long walk around the village, to identify issues that hinder walking, cycling and wheeling safely. Participants will help identify locations for new benches, cycle racks and ways forward in making Rigside safer. A paper and digital option to join the Community Street Audit will be provided at a later date. Booking essential at the details below.

Each event has been scheduled in line with Level 0 COVID guidance, including a maximum of 15 people from 15 households, excluding Under 12s. If demand is high, alternative dates and / or starting times for both events will be considered, with potential to expand to Douglas Water focussed events too. 

The programme is supported by Paths for All’s Smarter Choices Smarter Places, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and South Lanarkshire Council’s Renewable Energy Fund. It is managed by Rural Development Trust’s Community Action Lanarkshire team. The community of Glespin voted to progress a Feasibility Study for an active travel route to Douglas, whilst the community in Crawford voted to progress a Feasibility Study for pedestrian safety measures.

Community Action Lanarkshire encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, to ensure there is representation from across the spectrum of people who use these streets daily.” 

This year’s Make Your Way project also includes a programme of community and school cycling activities and training, the development of sustainable travel information booklets, and the installation of Make Your Way mapboards and wayfinding in Crawford and Elvanfoot, Glespin, and Rigside and Douglas Water.
