Active Travel Programme
Primary pupils are celebrating the end of their school's active travel programme which saw children across Clydesdale get on their bikes and learn skills to keep them safe on the road.
Six schools in rural Clydesdale have been taking part in Bikeability sessions designed to give children skills and confidence on their bikes, and to promote cycling as an active travel option for making journeys. They also took part in a session where they designed placards for display outside their schools to spread the message of reducing car use.
Pupils at Rigside, Lamington, Leadhills, Abington, Crawford and Douglas have benefited from sessions organised by LEADER supported Community Action Lanarkshire and led by Ice cream Architecture and Free Wheel North, with Bikeability sessions starting in the playground to gain confidence before heading onto the quiet roads next to the school to put their learning into practice.
Bikeability is the national cycle training programme for school children, and has been well received by schools, with Rigside Primary staff saying “The children thoroughly enjoyed the session while learning important skills involved with cycling, especially on the roads”.
These programmes are part of the wider ‘Make Your Way’ project funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places and the Renewable Energy Fund, and managed by Community Action Lanarkshire supported by South Lanarkshire LEADER.
