11.30am - 12 noon: Free Film Screening and refreshments, inside Chatelherault Visitor Centre
12 noon - 1pm: Free all ages and abilities guided cycle ride. Own bike and helmet required, ride will be mostly on footpaths - suitable for most bikes apart from racing bikes. Meet in front of Chatelherault visitor centre. Ride length approx. 8km ride which will include short hilly sections taken at a slow pace.
Members of the public are invited to attend the FREE premiere of a short film screening followed by an hour long guided cycle ride around Chatelherault Country Park on Saturday 28 July.
The ‘Clubhut 2 Chatelherault’ film was directed and shot in collaboration between artist Alan Kain, photographer Scott Jones and the Larkhall-based Clydesdale Colts Cycling Club. It showcases the skills and dedication of the group of young talented cyclists exploring the route between their club hut in Larkhall and their mountain bike trails in the ancient woodland of the Chatelherault, and will inspire folk to take up their bikes and explore the routes at Chatelherault themselves. The film will be shown in Chatelherault Visitor Centre, 11:30am – 12 noon, and refreshments will be provided.
It will be followed by a guided cycle ride with icecream architecture to explore some of the routes featured in the film and other cycling trails in the Country Park. The route takes in the 10km of recently improved pathways within Chatelherault, as well as highlighting local routes out of the park, linking to Hamilton, Larkhall and Quarter. The ride is suitable for all ages and abilities, and participants will be required to take their own bike and helmet. Meet in front of the Visitor Centre at 12 noon. The ride is approximately 8km long, including short hilly sections taken at a slow pace, and will finish at approximately 1pm.
Both events are FREE of charge and all ages and abilities are welcome. Although the screening and guided cycle ride have been organised as a package, participants are not obliged to take part in both events unless they wish. Please book by contacting icecream architecture on 0141 237 8592, or
The film screening and guided cycle are taking place as part of the Make Your Way Chatelherault project, which promotes six walking and cycling routes to Chatelherault Country Park from Hamilton, Larkhall and Quarter. The project was supported by Scottish Government, Paths for All and Transport Scotland Smarter Choices, Smarter Places fund, and Heritage Lottery Fund and South Lanarkshire LEADER supported Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP). It was delivered by icecream architecture and Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust.
Artist Alan Kain says, “Most of these kids through the Clydesdale Colts have been visiting and enjoying Chatelherault Country Park on a weekly basis for the last seven years, it’s a home from home for them, where they feel free, but at the same time surrounded by nature, and the joys of being outdoors in all seasons. It’s great for them to be able to share their passion and knowledge of Chatelherault with others through the film.”
The Make Your Way Chatelherault project included the installation of colourful waymarkers, paving markers and benches created in collaboration with the local community, highlighting routes and heritage features on the Barncluith, Fairholm, Merryton, Millheugh, South Haugh and Sunnyside routes. The six routes offer alternative walking and cycling access to Chatelherault Country Park - one of Scotland’s most significant designed landscapes, steeped in heritage, cultural and ecological diversity.
The film will be available to watch online from Tuesday 31 July, on the online Museum, by clicking on the ‘Art, Literature and Song’ tab. It will also be available through the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership Facebook and Twitter channels.
