Schools, community groups and businesses around Plains, Greengairs and Upperton are working with Community Action Lanarkshire to create their own unique 5-year Community-led Action Plans that represent the views, vision and projects for the villages future.

A programme of community consultation has now kicked off and as many local people as possible are needed to take part. This will offer everyone in the community a chance to have their say about what is good, and what could be better about living in Plains, Greengairs and Upperton.

One survey for each village has been launched and will be distributed to households in the area, also available at

George McCutcheon from Plains Community Futures said, “This action plan will help us be clear about the kind of changes we want to make happen in our villages, and to influence service providers to do the right things here.”

Ruth McElhinney from Community Action Lanarkshire said, “Communities are better places to live when people work together towards a common purpose, where the focus is on local people-led action. Once the survey results are in, the results will be analysed and public drop in events will be held to get more feedback to help finalise the action plan. We are really looking forward to seeing what people say and helping each community develop, fund and deliver changes to improve local lives for generations to come.”

This project is being supported by Community Action Lanarkshire which is managed by the Rural Development Trust and supported by LEADER as part of the Scottish Rural Development Programme until September 2020. LEADER is co-funded by the European Union and supports eligible projects in rural areas.
