Schools in rural Clydesdale encouraged to get on their bikes!

Six schools in rural Clydesdale are taking part in cycling sessions designed to give children skills and confidence on their bikes, and to promote cycling as an active travel option for making journeys.

Rigside Primary and Lamington Primary took part in late 2019, with both groups undertaking playground sessions to gain confidence before heading onto the quiet roads next to the school to put their learning into practice.  The pupils at Lamington Primary have really enjoyed the sessions with teacher Anita Baskerville saying

"The children were thoroughly engaged in the Bikeability sessions, with all of them growing in confidence and skill level.  From a practitioner's perspective, it was so worthwhile seeing the instructors working with the children in a variety of settings e.g. playground, hall and indeed on the road.  Above all, the sessions were great fun!".

Throughout January and February there will be further sessions at Leadhills, Abington, Crawford and Douglas primary schools.

The sessions are part of the wider ‘Make Your Way’ project funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places and managed by Community Action Lanarkshire supported by South Lanarkshire LEADER.  The cycling sessions are run by Glasgow-based Free Wheel North and follow the principles of Bikeability which teaches key on-road skills such as manoeuvring a junction and indicating to traffic. 

The 9 communities covered by the Make Your Way project also have the opportunity to get involved in mapping workshops and take part in led walking and cycling sessions to identify the active travel routes in their villages.  Further information about the Make Your Way project can be found on the Community Action Lanarkshire website and Facebook page.
