The Orchard Project was on site at Kirkfieldbank Park a few weeks ago running their Certificate in Community Orcharding. The community garden in Kirkfieldbank Park was an ideal location as the course covers the pruning of trained forms.
The community apple trees were expertly pruned under the supervision of nurseryman Andrew Lear which will reduce the risk of disease and promote healthy growth in the future.
And nothing goes to waste! In the afternoon some of the cut branches were used to learn about bud grafting (which took place at CCI). Then the remaining branches were chopped and distributed under the trees to help retain moisture and return nutrients to the soil.
